ANGLER FISH -- Competed Manuscript, 800 words

What is life like for a hunter, lurking in total darkness, 4000 meters below the sea's surface? The
answer can be found in my 800 word non-fiction piece, entitled "Angler Fish: The Black Devil of
the Deep." This manuscript, which placed second in the 2006 Smart Writer's W. I. N.
Competition and was honored with a SCBWI's Barbara Karlin Grant, will appeal to independent
readers who enjoy reading about unusual creatures from the sea.

Of the over two hundred different species of Angler fish, I limited my focus to the deep sea
Angler. Information on Angler fish is not easy to come by, since these unusual fish remain very
much a mystery to scientists. I choose to write about the Angler because I saw an opportunity
to write about a creature that is largely ignored. Furthermore, I was intrigued by the idea of
taking a creature that is considered hideously ugly and writing about that creature in a way that
dispels that notion. For that reason, I chose to show the Angler fish as a thing of beauty-a
powerful female in motion.
